1885 Fort Worth ~ Hell’s Half Acre ~ Chisholm Trail

1885 Fort Worth ~ Hell's Half Acre map poster. Available in 36"x24" and 24"x18" sheet sizes.

Fort Worth was the last resupply outpost in Texas before the great trail herds moved north to Red River Station and into Indian Territory and the Chisholm Trail on their way north to the railheads in Kansas. As the herds were rested on the plains next to the Trinity River and the trail bosses re-provisioned the outfit, the trail-weary cowboys took part of their pay into Hell’s Half Acre which was about a mile south of the Tarrant County courthouse.

History tells us that Fort Worth’s Hell’s Half Acre and the “Uptown” district were about as rough as it got in the early days. The “Acre” grew and lasted a long time, finally disappearing in the early 1920’s.

This new Hell’s Half Acre map tells the whole story using a number of original maps of the 1881-1889 period just as the trail drives were declining but the Acre was still roaring.
